Light the Town is Downtown Hilo’s beloved annual holiday event, bringing festive cheer to families and visitors of all ages. Hosted by the Downtown Improvement Association, this free community celebration kicks off the holiday season with the ceremonial lighting of the town’s Christmas decorations, transforming Hilo’s historic streets into a twinkling winter wonderland.

Families can enjoy a magical evening filled with live holiday music, keiki crafts, photos with Santa, and local food vendors offering warm treats and festive favorites. Downtown businesses stay open late, many offering holiday specials, giveaways, and ornament-making stations. The highlight of the evening is the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, accompanied by carolers and joyful performances by local school groups and hula hālau.
