Light the Town: Christmas Family Event
Light the Town is Downtown Hilo’s beloved annual holiday event, bringing festive cheer to families and visitors of all ages. Hosted by the Downtown Improvement Association, this free community celebration kicks off the holiday season with the ceremonial lighting of the town’s Christmas decorations, transforming Hilo’s historic streets into a twinkling winter wonderland.
Families can enjoy a magical evening filled with live holiday music, keiki crafts, photos with Santa, and local food vendors offering warm treats and festive favorites. Downtown businesses stay open late, many offering holiday specials, giveaways, and ornament-making stations. The highlight of the evening is the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, accompanied by carolers and joyful performances by local school groups and hula hālau.
Light the Town is more than just a celebration—it’s a heartwarming tradition that brings the community together, supports small businesses, and shares the aloha spirit of the season throughout Hilo Town.

The 1st Annual Downtown Hilo Food Show: A Food Show Fundraiser
Tastes of Hilo is a signature food show fundraiser hosted by the Downtown Improvement Association, bringing together the island’s top chefs, local restaurants, and food artisans for a flavorful celebration of community and cuisine. Guests enjoy an evening of delicious bites, live music, and local culture—all in support of ongoing projects to preserve and enhance Downtown Hilo. Proceeds from the event directly fund beautification efforts, public art, and community programming that keep our historic town center thriving.

Paint the Town: Hilo Mural Project
The Paint the Town Mural Project is a vibrant public art initiative by the Downtown Improvement Association aimed at transforming blank walls into colorful canvases that reflect Hilo’s rich culture, history, and community spirit. By partnering with local artists, businesses, and property owners, the project brings large-scale murals to life throughout Downtown Hilo—creating visual landmarks, supporting creative expression, and fostering a deeper sense of place. Each mural tells a story, turning our town into an open-air gallery for residents and visitors to enjoy.

End of Summer Bash

4th of July Block Party
Downtown Hilo Improvement Association presents this years 4th of July Block Party — happening right here in the heart of Hilo at the end of Kamehameha Ave! From 12pm - 8:30pm, get ready for a full day of family fun with live entertainment, ‘ono food trucks, keiki activities, craft vendors, and more! The night ends with a band — en epic firework show at 8pm you wont want to miss!
